kathleen -- beatrice -- samantha --

sasha ritter & chi-lin sun, the owners of the fine shop LMNOP, did some visual investigating of the work and homes of 3 uber talented women: beatrice valenzuela, kathleen whitaker & samantha grisdale. the results are quite thoughtful.

pineapple >> prop

we've just added 5 new bracelets to the shop -- various characteristics you will find in them: stripes, hint of mint, double stranded beauty, a touch of the right lavender, color goodness, and all around goodness. and a pineapple might be the greatest prop in the fruit family. now back to our/your sunday merriment.

boring to bleach

satisfaction is....taking a shirt out of the "give away pile", spraying it with bleach, and turning it into an everyday staple.

NEW FRIENDS

new work by New Friends

great story: New Friends is Alexandra Segreti (Weird Friends) and Kelly Rakowski (Nothing is New). Alex and Kelly first connected on the internet with a shared love of textiles and eccentric visuals. They began working on weavings together, apart. Months later they met IRL, shared their work and became New Friends.

let's make nice on purpose: LMNOP

somehow this shop came across our radar a few weeks ago and a. we haven't gotten it out of our heads and b. why keep this to ourselves? and c. isn't that name compelling and so current? it's located in newport beach, california which sadly equals very far away from our homes (minnesota). run by two girlfriends, LMNOP curates a collection of objects for the home, wearable goods for adults and children, yarn & knitting supplies, apothecary items, books for adults and children and curios from all over the place. learn all about them here. and you're also going to want to follow them on pinterest.

family portrait

some of them gathered today to drink some water together and then said goodbye as they settled into different positions around the house. it seems the world is a flutter right now over plants. are we trying to blur that line between indoor and outdoor? perhaps. but maybe we're just tired of winter. grow on fine oxygen givers, grow on.

01 March 2012

this morning. in our inbox. from one of our favorite shops:

it's a rare thing to receive a heartfelt mass email- and to be moved. This note from one of our favorite shops, Practical Goods arrived this morning and it's tone is so right on we just had to share. Plus, we want this great shop filled with super reasonably prices used items, perfect/messy collections, and like the name implies- Practical bits for your home and body, to stay around awhile. Read this- Go There- Keep PG in Business. It's Just Right.

****************************************************

Dear Practical Goods Shoppers and Facebook fans,

Last February I put up a 'store closing' sign in the window. I had no lease, sales were awful, the store next door was vacant (again), and the landlady said "just go". She had had plans to sell to developers who would raze the south end of the block and throw up a CVS.
With a 'closing' sign up, sales improved. I caught up on rent and had enough left over to consider relocating. Then the CVS deal stalled and the landlady asked me to stay. A new business rented next door and the 'closing' sign turned to 'staying'. By the end of 2011, I had actually reached the sales goal I'd set and missed for years, after I'd expanded, doubled my rent and the economy tanked. (It was the sale that got me to that goal, finally.)
2012 January sales were down 25%, February will be down 50%. Here's my conundrum: if I put up a 'going out of business' sign  I may be able to generate enough sales to stay in business, at least in the short term. Most modern ways of doing business are antithetical to my mission and ethics: selling online, taking plastic, messaging you endlessly and other retail tatics likely to improve sales are nothing I want to do. I'd rather 'hang it up'.
Before I do that though, I wanted to let you know what's going on and invite you to 'vote' as consumers. If you believe Practical Goods should stay in business, please shop here, and invite friends to shop here.
As an additional incentive, I'm reprising last winters sale. Now through the end of March - 20% off, storewide. This is for you regular shoppers and those who appreciate quality goods at a reasonable price. No 'sale vultures' are invited. If, at the end of March there's not enough business to continue, I'll put up the closing signs. Ten years is a good run, and in any case, I'm proud to have had your custom.

                                Thanks,

                                Wendi & the Cats.
